서울지하철 3호선 녹번역과 무악재역 사이에 있다. 1985년 7월 12일 개업했다. 역명은 동명에서 유래했으며, 홍제(弘濟)는 조선시대 때, 중국을 오가는 사신과 일반 여행객들이 휴식을 취하고, 사신들이 예복을 갈아입고 입궐 준비 등을 하던 국립여관 홍제원에서 붙여졌다. 역 주변에 고은초등학교, 디지털서울문화예술대학교, 서대문구청, 서대문도서관, 서대문세무서, 서부노인복지센터, 서울여자간호대학, 인왕시장, 인왕중학교, 인왕초등학교, 홍제1동주민센터, 홍제치안센터, 홍제동우체국 등이 있다. 서울메트로 소속으로 서울특별시 서대문구 통일로 지하 440-1(홍제동 330-66)에 있다.
