사계절 내내 축제가 끊이지 않는 광장, 서울광장이다. 차들로 가득했던 도로를 공원으로 만들었는데, 서울 도심 한복판에 자리한 넓은 잔디마당으로 시민들에게 많은 사랑을 받고 있다. 서울 시청 앞 광장은 우리 근·현대사의 고비 고비마다 많은 시민들이 모여 보다 나은 세상을 꿈꾸며 함께 행동을 해 왔던 역사적인 장소로 우리들에게 기억된다. 2002년 한·일 월드컵 당시 길거리 응원의 메카로 광장을 붉게 물들이며 흥겹게 어울렸던 기억이 아직 생생하다.
총 면적 13,207㎡의 서울광장의 절반 이상은 타원형으로 모양 짓고 있는 잔디광장이다. 점심때면 식사를 마치고 산책을 나온 주변 직장인들로, 저녁이면 일을 마치고 시내에 나왔다 잠시 쉬어 가는 사람들이 광장의 여유로운 분위기를 만들고 또 즐긴다. 서울광장은 연중 다양한 행사가 열려 흥겨운 축제의 분위기인데 신나는 공연에서부터 여러 종류의 기념행사까지 그 내용이 다양하다.
서울광장 한 쪽에 분수대가 설치되어 있어 여름이면 그 사이를 오가며 즐거워하는 아이들의 웃음소리가 넘치고, 겨울에는 광장 한 쪽에 스케이트장이 설치되어 도심 한가운데서 화려한 조명을 받으며 스케이트를 타는 특별한 체험을 할 수 있다. 광장을 바라보고 있는 서울 시청 본관은 일제 때 지어진 건물로 보존과 철거의 논쟁을 거쳐 현재 공사 중이다. 외벽은 그대로 보존하면서 뒤로 새로운 건물을 지어 서울시민들이 이용할 수 있는 복합문화공간으로 사용할 예정이라고 한다.

An exciting square where festivals are held throughout the year

The exterior walls will be preserved and a new building will be built back to use as a multi-cultural space for residents of Seoul.
